Work Site: Brooklyn, NY
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The Facilities & Logistics Division keeps DHS shelters safe, functional and in good repair. As a Cement Mason, you’ll pour, finish and repair concrete surfaces—sidewalks, curbs, floors and more—ensuring our buildings remain structurally sound and ready to serve New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Place, level, and finish concrete for sidewalks, floors, roads and curbs

  • Prep job sites by grading and smoothing surfaces with hand and power tools

  • Mix concrete to proper ratios; install rebar, wire mesh and anchor bolts

  • Apply curing and sealing compounds; monitor weather effects on concrete

  • Repair spalled or cracked concrete using industry-approved methods

  • Read blueprints and specs to determine materials, dimensions and layout

  • Safely operate mixers, power trowels, screeds and related equipment

  • Follow all city, state and federal building codes and safety regulations

  • Keep work areas clean; maintain tools and report any safety concerns

Minimum Requirements

  1. Five years’ full-time, satisfactory cement-mason experience or

  2. Three years’ cement-mason experience plus enough mason-helper work or approved trade-school training to total five years (one year of helper/training = six months of mason credit).

Preferred Skills

  • Deep knowledge of concrete properties and finishing techniques

  • Proficiency with concrete hand and power tools

  • Ability to read construction drawings and blueprints

  • Excellent physical stamina; able to lift, bend, kneel and stand for long periods

  • Attention to detail and high-quality craftsmanship

  • Valid NYS driver’s licence
